Think Outside The Beat is the brainchild of Annette Cannon, PhD, who is looking to help students learn educational content through the aid of musical beats. Music is the socially, developmentally and natural way to engage students in learning!! Research on music and on music therapy has found that music and math are related in the brain from very early in life (Burack, 2005). Musical elements such as steady beat, rhythm, melody, and tempo possess inherent mathematical principles such as spatial properties, sequencing, counting, patterning, and one-to-one correspondence. Music also seems to be related to very primal parts of the brain (Hudson 2011). Our bodies can- not help but react physiologically to musical input (Thaut & Kenyon 2003; Hasan & Thaut 2004). This type of research, along with a combination of personal experiences with her own students, prompted Dr. Cannon to form this company.
In addition, she also promotes Music Is Healing, connecting the body and mind. "A study published in the Journal of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in December 2012, states that not only does music release dopamine and affect our pleasure sensors, many brain regions linked to finding music rewarding, including the emotion-processing amygdala and two higher-level emtion-processing regions found in the frontal lobe of the brain. Another frontal lobe region, the inferior frontal gyrus, was also linked to finding music pleasurable. This area handles advanced thought, working memory and pattern sequencing" (2013, Live Science).
Dr. Cannon also has a music promotion company called JMoon Promotions, in which she promotes live local music and an after-school program called "Got Music?" c/tm, that helps homeless children by giving the gift of music to heal some of their emotional pains.
